Journaling Prompts by Phase
Sixteen prompts, two per phase, built to give a monthly cycle real structure — plus a comparison of journal formats and a supply list with realistic prices.
Why Match Prompts to the Moon
Daily journaling is hard to sustain because "write your feelings" has no edges. Matching prompts to the eight lunar phases gives you eight fixed checkpoints a month instead — few enough to keep up with, spaced far enough apart to actually notice change between entries.
Prompts for Each Phase
New Moon
- What do I want to begin, and why now?
- What did last month's new-moon intention actually teach me?
Waxing Crescent
- What's the smallest next step I can take this week?
- Who or what do I need to ask for help with?
First Quarter
- What obstacle is testing my commitment right now?
- Where am I tempted to quit, and what would staying look like?
Waxing Gibbous
- What needs refining before it's ready to share?
- What am I avoiding out of impatience?
Full Moon
- What has come to fruition this month?
- What am I ready to release?
Waning Gibbous
- What lesson would I teach someone a month behind me?
- Where can I express real gratitude today?
Last Quarter
- What am I forgiving — myself or someone else?
- What clutter, physical or emotional, is ready to go?
Waning Crescent
- What does genuine rest look like for me this week?
- What am I quietly grieving or closing?

Building a Sustainable Practice
- Set a recurring reminder two nights before each full and new moon.
- Keep the journal physically near your bed, not buried in a drawer.
- Use one page per phase, not per day, to lower the pressure to write daily.
- Reread the previous month's new-moon page before writing the new one.
- Eight anchor entries a month is plenty — don't aim for daily.
